Write Around The Toon 2012

The launch of Write Around The Toon 2012 is tomorrow! Thursday 7 June, 7pm at Northern Stage. Tickets are free, but please register for them online in advance so we have an idea of numbers.

This is the second year I’ve run the project, and I’ve also been doing two of the residencies joint with the poet Kris Anderson. You can read about Kris and my adventures onboard Flow via the project website – http://www.writearoundthetoon.co.uk – and follow the development of the audio piece we’re co-writing for our joint residency at Baltic.

The launch is the culmination of a fantastic few months of thirteen writers undertaking short residencies in sixteen of the region’s major cultural venues. During their time as writers-in-residence, the WATT writers have run workshops for schoolgroups on writing 6-word stories, led late-night poetry tours round portrait exhibitions, sat in on rehearsals of new productions, fished debris out of the Tyne, poked about in every nook and cranny they were allowed into, created UV displays of personal secrets, learnt how to change the lens of a cinema projector, written poetry about DNA, recorded the voices and experiences of dancers, played the piano and much, much more. Write Around The Toon has been described as a ‘kraken of creativity’, with tendrils of inspiration reaching across the city. We’ve also produced a site-specific creative writing exercise for each of the venues.

At the launch we’ll be revealing all sixteen of the 2012 writing exercises, displaying photographs and blog posts from the residencies, and presenting a series of short readings of new work inspired by the WATT residencies. Hope to see you there!
